Skype in the Classroom - Exploring Oceans

Tomorrow Room 1 will be taking part in their first Skype in the Classroom lesson. We will be speaking with Tom Campbell, who is a diver who does underwater photography and video.

Oceanography/Water pressure

Our teacher Mr Walker chose me to do an experiment on water pressure so if you want to try this then get the following:

You need:
2 jars one small,one large
Water, as much as you want in each jar and or cup
One straw

Optional
A pencil and paper for notes

Method-
Now blow gently at the surface of the water now listen
If there's a bubbly noise and it's nice and light your doing it right.

Blow at the bottom of the cup or jar and listen to the noise it should be a
Ruff but light sound

Now which way is it harder to blow top or bottom?

It should be the bottom because the pressure is pushing it down.
For example-If you were at the bottom of they ocean the weight on top of
You would be like a elephant on top of your fingernail and so that's why a submarine or any other under water vehicle has to be tuff .You should now try it,
With the bigger jar comment on this once you have tried it or tell your teacher to try it with your class room!

Border Control - Biosecurity Activity

Our class held a customs check, we all had to take our bags. Mr Walker and Mr Cartwright (Room 3) had put contraband into our bags and our customs officers searched our bags to see what they could find.

Today we had ICT it was so fun. We had to make a poster I did mine about the red vented bulbul. I finished mine in two mornings. I learned that the red vented bulbul eats flower petals.

What is Biosecurity?

On Monday we were learning about biosecurity and what it is.  I learned that biosecuity has a company that is trying to keep diseases away from New Zealand safe.  Here are some diseases or risks, rock snot (didymo),  pests and the red vented bulbul. The red vented bulbul is a bird that has a red patch on its bottom and is trying to destroy fruit. By Francis

Searching for the Red Vented Bulbul

Room 1 was introduced to Biosecurity today when they went outside to look for the Red Vented Bulbul, it is a bird that has been in the news recently and some organisations want to get rid of it. As a class we read a news article, looked at the fact sheet and then went on a hunt for the bird in our school grounds. We didn't find any though...
 

The Museum trip

On Wednesday room 1, 2, 3 and some of room four went to the Auckland Museum. The first thing we had to do was get into our groups and my dad Hamish was one of the parents to go on the trip with us. After we got sorted we went on the bus, there were eight groups on one bus. There were sixteen groups so the teacher had to split the groups in half once we were on the buses we were off to the museum, my group, my parent and I on the party bus and the music was as loud as a boombox.

As soon as we got to the museum we stooed out in the cold wind. My favorite part of the trip was the volcano house because the house show whats is going to happen in a volcano eruption and it was like being in a real eruption.

Ooblek

On the 14th June, Mr Walker surpised us by making Ooblek! At first I didn't know what it meant and then when he showed us...... I was super excited! When Mr Walker called Aisha (my partner) and me up, we choose the colour green. After we chose, Mr Walker instructed us what to do. It was pretty hard when I mixed the cornflour, water and food colouring together. Then, Aisha and me sat down on the slippery, slidey mat, we started playing with it. It was kind of disgusting at first but we got used to it. Aisha started putting it on my wrist so I put some on her wrist. After when we had finished the Ooblek, we had to tidy up.

It was such a wicked time! I wish we can do it again!

My Eye-test by Sara

Today, kids were called up to do their eye-test, we had to go to Room8 to get it done. There were three stations to go to.  We had to sit down and then they tell us what to do like: "Please look at the chart and call out the letters". It was really hard because the letters were getting smaller at the end and they were hard to say them. When I got to the third station, my eyes were sore from all that light flashing in my eyes. When I finished, I got my light meter, a light meter is when you have to wear the light meter on your top and it records how much light you have been watching in a day.  You have to wear the badge all the time when you are awake, you have to take it off when you go to bed.

My eyes were sore but it was fun.

On Friday, we put an egg into a container of hot and cold water to see what would happen to the egg as more salt was added.
